PIRELLI MARANELLO FERRARI CHALLENGE
RACE REPORT : ROUND 11 : CROFT : 19/20 AUGUST 2000

PADDOCK STORIES

  • Just like last year, the Croft organisers could not have been more helpful in making it an enjoyable weekend for all the competitors. The meeting was labelled the Croft Historic Festival and included a multitude of events including some great flying displays.

  • Sue and Paul Skinner, the organisers of the Club's Yorkshire Area Group, had organised a wonderful display of Ferraris in front of the hospitality marquee and 15 of these took part in the various parade laps around the circuit prior to the commencing of racing on Sunday.

  • Two GT4s on the front row of the grid! When was the last time that happened or, indeed, has it ever happened? No doubt Anne will already have the answer ready as this is being written…..

  • The Hetherington F50's ignition problems were probably due to a faulty engine sensor. One coil went down in qualifying on Saturday, which meant that poor Jason had to dash back to base in Knutsford to get a spare. Another coil failure finally nobbled the car during Sunday's race, much to the relief, no doubt, of Alan Cosby, whose car was also suffering on the mechanical side.

  • A very welcome returnee to the series was the 308GTB of Duncan McKay. This is probably one of the most famous of all the Ferrari Maranello racers in that it was the ex-John Wilson car which won both the "O" class (in 1987) and the "M" class (in 1991), as well as two Macau Superprix in 1990 and 1991. Following lengthy restoration, it went on to win its class at the FOC Concours in 1994 during Christian Mineeff's ownership.

  • The two SEB drivers, Andy Christopher and Andrew Micheals, did not have a good time with their 308s, with Andy suffering an engine malady during pre-race testing and Andrew being slowed by oil problems during the race itself. When they are right these David Wedge-prepared engines certainly fly but one wonders whether the end of the development road on a 308 engine is finally being reached.
