FERRARI HILL CLIMB CHAMPIONSHIP
REPORT : ROUND 11 : CURBOROUGH : 7 OCTOBER 2001
by Richard Allen

This was an exciting final round, with Geoff Dark winning the 2001 series by the smallest whisker from Nick Frost - just one point seperated them at the close of play!

Twelve runners in the Ferrari class included all the serious contestants, with the possibility of changes in position for the first three places in the final reckoning. Nick Frost (348GTC) really needed to get a second on points to be home and dry, and he just missed, despite putting in a really fast run that netted third on scratch.

Jon Goodwin (F355), predictably took the class with another record time about half a second ahead of my 328. Nick Frost was just a tenth back in his 348, whilst an amazingly fired up Peter Hitchman placed his F355 ahead of the likes of Peter Hayman (512TR) and Geoff Dark (using his 308GTB this time).

When the points were added up unfortunately for Nick I took the twenty points and Jon the seventeen, leaving Nick on fifteen and Geoff on thirteen. Nick had to drop an eleven and Geoff a twelve point score as it is the best of seven. They wound up on 106 and 105 respectively. Could that have been closer?

Other happenings at Curborough included a gung-ho Robin Ward with his 355 Challenge race car knocking over the track furniture and getting in lots of off-piste time, though on one occasion he got to the finish in 34 seconds or so! Martin McGlone, not seen out in the FHCC for many years, was impressively fast in practice in my 328, but wildly spun his chances away when it mattered, which was right in front of me in spectator mode!

An excellent season! We'll bring you a seasonal survey soon.
