FERRARI HILLCLIMB CHAMPIONSHIP
REPORT : ROUND 6 : SHELSLEY WALSH : 10/11 JUNE 2000

Judging from the entry list, this was going to be another exciting confrontation between the main Ferrari hillclimbers. A full class of eleven cars turned up for practice, with such luminaries as Geoff Rollason, Robin Ward, Jon Goodwin, Richard Allen and John Swift leading the pack.

Practice already produced a stunning time from Rollason in his 360 Modena, which at 34.55 secs, was below the existing class record held by Jon Goodwin. Richard Allen (360) had a troubled Saturday and blew two tyres when his car went over the kerbs at the "S"s. Goodwin (355) was in the 35s, with Ward (308GTB) and Marshall (328GTB) in the 36s.

Sunday dawned warm and fine and a fully-committed Goodwin set the quickest time on a 34.68, followed by Rollason who was nearly one second slower than his practice best. John Marshall drove extremely hard to record an excellent 36.26 to narrowly lead Ward and Geoff Dark (GT4), who had an enormous moment at Crossing but never blinked or lifted.

John Swift's 308 was decidedly off-colour during the first run but a plug change brought it back to life for the second runs, by which time we had all become used to the commentator calling the 360s "Madonnas"!

The second runs were eagerly awaited with a number of runners keen to knock Goodwin off his quickest time. It was not to be for his 355 charged up the hill in a time of 34.51, which set a new class record. Rollason's howling 360 was left trailing by over half a second but into a surprising but well-deserved third place came John Marshall in the 328 following a determined run.

A somewhat off-form Robin Ward took fourth place, ahead of Dark, Baker (GT4) and the 360 of FHC supremo Richard Allen. Following on from his emphatic Harewood victory over the cream of the FHC drivers, it will be difficult to bet against Jon Goodwin continuing his successful season for the remainder of the year.

Marshall's quick pace was enough to secure him the maximum FHC points, followed by Goodwin and Ward. In the Championship table, Ward still leads with 80 points but Marshall is edging closer with 73.
